Homework Policy

It is the recommendation of the Marblehead School Committee that fourth grade students receive between 30 minutes to one hour of homework each night. Homework is based upon the material covered in class and should be a practice of those skills. Children should plan to spend up to an hour of dedicated work time on homework each night. If your child has difficulty doing or completing the assignments in the given time, please attach a note to their assignment notebook to let us know. Students are responsible for recording daily assignments in the provided assignment books and parents are asked to sign the notebook each night. Homework will be given Monday through Thursday (reading on Friday). Long term assignments may require some work on weekends. Homework is expected to be turned in on time. I will accept homework one day late, but this will adversely affect the student's grade. Students will not receive a sticker if homework is incomplete and I will circle the missing work. I will attempt to list homework daily on my website. Homework club is on Thursdays from 2:15 until 2:45, students must stay in the classroom and need to be working on school work, this is to ensure that those who want to work can do so.
Absences

Students are expected to make up work that is missed, including tests, projects, homework, and classwork within a week after their first day back. It is best if the student can check in with me after school regarding missed work upon returning. As a parent, I certainly understand that extenuating circumstances arise and I am willing to work with you and your student. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Birthdays

Birthdays are a special event that we like to acknowledge in school. Our policy at Village is that children do not bring in food treats to celebrate their birthday. So many children have allergies and conditions that don’t allow them to have cupcakes, cookies, etc. For this reason, our birthday celebrations will be simple with good wishes and a song. On a side note, I request that students having birthday parties outside of school do not distribute invitations at school in order to avoid hurt feelings (4th grade is a sensitive age in this respect!). Thank you for your support in this matter.
